Lloyd Blankfein

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Goldman Sachs

A Conversation with Goldman Sachs Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein

Lloyd Blankfein, chairman and chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs, sat down with State Street Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joseph L. Hooley III ’79 at the March 22 meeting of the Boston College Chief Executives Club. In this question-and-answer session, Blankfein discussed the economy and markets, touching on a number of topics including the past mortgage crisis, his company’s move to consumer lending, and Europe’s current leading statesman.

Takeaway

Mortgage Crisis

“I was very philosophical in my thinking…I said: I knew it! If I’m going to be a CEO, the world’s going to blow up. We’re involved in everything, and so nothing can go wrong anywhere without affecting us.”

Takeaway

Consumer Lending

“After 148 years, we’re going into a consumer lending business. It’s not so much that we changed as the opportunity changed because of technology. If you think of consumer lending, you make 500 loans, you have to know the people and their stories. But if you make 50 million loans, it’s math, it’s algorithms, it’s digital distribution, it’s risk management—all core strengths of ours.”

Takeaway

French President Emmanuel Macron

“The central leader in Europe right now is [French President Emmanuel] Macron, because [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel is weakened by having a weak coalition, whereas Macron got into government in a tsunami of support and controls his legislature. Now the question in Paris is, Will he get cold feet? Will he see it through?”
