James J. Murren

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, MGM Resorts International

“Harnessing Social Responsibility and Corporate Culture to Drive Innovation and Excellence”

Businesses can do well while doing good, MGM Resorts International Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James J. Murren told the Chief Executives’ Club of Boston on December 5. He talked about overhauling the company’s corporate culture after the recession, investing in his employees, and the gambling and entertainment giant’s bid, now under state gambling commission review, to build an $800 million resort casino in Springfield, Mass.

Takeaway

Weathering the Recession

[In 2008] we could not do anything wrong, even though we were doing everything wrong … Our day of reckoning came with the recession.

Takeaway

Human Capital

On the people side of the business, we have invested heavily … If I don’t get that part of it right, there’s nothing else I can do, as the ex-CFO or CEO, to generate an adequate return.

Takeaway

A Successful Business Model

[With the Expanded Gaming Act, Massachusetts was] looking for significant injection of economic activity and energy, and of course job growth along with it ... That is our strength as a company ... and it’s a business model, I believe, that is not as vulnerable to neighboring states opening up.

Takeaway

Jobs in Springfield

If we prevail in Springfield, as I deeply want to and expect to, we’re going to employ about 2,000 people to build this beautiful resort and to help revitalize downtown Springfield. And we will employ 3,000 men and women permanently once we’re open.
