Brian T. Moynihan

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bank of America

A Conversation with Brian T. Moynihan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bank of America

Brian T. Moynihan, chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of America, sat down with Thomas May, chairman emeritus of Eversource Energy, at the November 8 meeting of the Boston College Chief Executives Club. Moynihan, who has served as chief executive officer since 2010, discussed the economy, world markets, and Bank of America’s commitment to the environment. He also spoke about his bank’s approach to responsible growth, saying, “You have to be the best place for teammates to work. You have to share your success with your communities. And you have to drive what we [Bank of America] call operational excellence, which gives us the permission to save money and invest in the future of the franchise.”

Takeaway

The Economy

“Through the end of October, consumers spent 9.5 percent more than they did last year. The year before that, it would have been 6 percent. The year before that would have been 3 percent. That is just a phenomenal rate of growth in consumer spending.”

Takeaway

Brexit

“We are basically dividing a system that was aggregated into one into two. So, if you multiply it times all the people—and we’re moving people around, we’re disrupting real people’s lives—this is not good for Europe in the near term.”

Takeaway

Climate Change

“What we add to the equation is financial knowledge and understanding how to bring more money to the task [a new energy environment]. And then we add a bit of how we behave as a company. So why it’s important to us is we think it’s a major issue for society.”
