This series highlights BC MBA students’ summer internships, featuring their firsthand accounts of navigating internshipsacross various industries and roles.

This past Summer, Shuyi Zhu (MBA ’26) interned at ByteDance in San Jose, California, as a risk investigation specialist for TikTok Shop - Governance and Experience.

How did you secure your internship?

I started my summer internship search relatively early, and during the process, I worked closely with my career advisor in practicing interview questions. These preparations helped me feel more confident during my interviews with TikTok, where I was able to demonstrate how my analytical background and interest in risk management made me a strong fit for the role.

How did the first year of your MBA prepare you for your internship?

My MBA studies prepared me well for my internship by equipping me with both analytical and strategic skills that I applied directly in my role. Beyond coursework, the MBA program gave me access to incredible resources and support that encouraged me to pivot and explore new industries. That freedom to try something different helped me better understand where my skills and interests align.

What did you gain from your internship?

I embraced TikTok’s “Always Day 1” mindset, which encouraged me to stay open-minded and continuously learn new things. Working in a fast-paced, high-growth team also taught me to be proactive, adaptable, and collaborative. This internship was especially valuable because it deepened my understanding of how e-commerce platforms manage risk and maintain trust among creators and users.
