The council is dedicated to creating better communication, new programming, increased financial support, and professional development opportunities. Hosting a variety of events each year—such as webinars and Reunion receptions—the AAAC promotes alumni involvement and investment in the BC AHANA community. Moreover, the council partners with campus groups to support current students through programs such as EagleExchange and Endeavor. Our signature event, RECONNECT, is a celebration of Boston College’s AHANA alumni community. Having hosted two memorable gatherings in 2009 and 2016, RECONNECT III in the summer of 2024 promises to be an unforgettable weekend at the Heights. We’re hoping you’ll join us!

The Wall Street Business Leadership Council, Council for Women of Boston College, and AHANA Alumni Advisory Council cordially invited guests to join them for the NYC Boston College Young Alumni Networking Night. This was an opportunity to interact with the volunteer leaders of some of our most established councils, as well as other BC alumni, who work in industries such as consulting, financial services, investment banking, marketing, real estate and the broader business community. Elisa Charters, members of the Parents Leadership Council; co-founder of the non-profit Latina Surge and a passionate advocate for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging and the BIPOC community of women; and Arivee Rozier-Byrd '05, LAW'08, member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, discussed actionable steps that will help support women of the Latina/X community both professionally and personally. The scope of this conversation included the empowerment of BIPOC women in both the private and public sector while offering tools and techniques to address disparities. They also discussed the ways that the Latina community and women of color can get involved within the BC community.

Steve Pemberton ’89, HON’15, MCGS’19, P ’23 and Patricia Lowe ’91, WGCAS ’23 discussed how AHANA alumni can approach their careers (whether just starting out, looking to take the next step, or seeking a career change). Especially in a landscape where the pandemic has particularly impacted the AHANA community, this event sought to answer questions that we all have related to career advancement. Steve Pemberton took a very non-linear path to becoming Chief Human Resources Officer at WorkHuman and is an industry expert in Human Resources and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. Patricia Lowe is the Executive Director for Institutional Diversity at Boston College.
The Talented Tenth: A Conversation With Dr. Martin Pierre

Dr. Martin Pierre ‘MCAS 89, LGSOE ‘02 and Gabriela (Biba) Fullon LSOE ‘05,LGSOE ‘06 engaged in a conversation around societal factors that have an impact on maintaining mental health within communities of color. During the course of the conversation, Dr. Pierre presented his findings on several topics while also providing information on how to cope and practice self-care given the trauma and challenges faced by AHANA communities.

In honor of Black History Month, the AHANA Alumni Advisory Council held a prayer service. It featured members of the AHANA community, the service was in celebration of the African American experience and the larger AHANA alumni community.
Racial Disparities and COVID-19
The conversation took place on August 13th and focused on racial inequities in the health-care system pertaining to COVID-19 and provided attendees with context for the issues and ways in which they can be addressed.
The event featured:
• Professor Nadia Abuelezam, professor at the Connell School of Nursing and epidemiologist, who is researching inequities in health outcomes and access in resource poor settings and vulnerable populations.
• Professor Renée Landers, JD'85, professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School; director of the Suffolk Law School Health and biomedical law concentration
• Juan Lopera '99, vice president, marketing and RI Medicaid, Tufts Health Public Plans; business diversity officer, Tufts Health Plan
