Small Bullett Mean SAT scores for the incoming freshman class rise for five straight years in the early to mid '80s. By 1986-87 the Boston College selectivity rating in Barron's Guide to Colleges has been elevated from "very competitive" to "highly competitive," the second highest category. Four years later the University will be ranked among the 44 "most competitive" institutions in the country, an elite designation it has retained ever since.


Small Bullett Bapst Library opens after renovation that includes the new John J. Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections.


Small Bullett "Goals for 1990's" academic planning document envisions BC in the year 2000 as a university grounded in distinctive Catholic and Jesuit identity and primed to achieve "new level of excellence".


Small Bullett Membership in the Fides Society, created with 61 members in 1972 for those giving $1,000 or more to the University, has grown to include 1,037 donors. By 1996, Fides membership will reach 1,820.
