Boston College has named Patrick O’Hern, senior director of project management services at Dartmouth College, as its new vice president for facilities management, effective February 3. He succeeds Dan Bourque, who is retiring at the end of January after 16 years of service to BC.A highly respected manager with 26 years of experience across corporate, commercial, residential, and higher education sectors, O’Hern has spent the past 14 years at Dartmouth supervising internal and contractual staff to support new building construction and major renovation projects for academic, residential, and athletic facilities. BC Facilities Updates Sustainable Operations Guidelines

Boston College has released an update to an initial set of Sustainable Operations Guidelines that were developed in 2015. The guidelines include information associated with energy use, green cleaning, water use, landscaping, purchasing, materials management, refrigerants, and the campus vehicular fleet. The updated guidelines were developed with both current and aspirational practices in mind, and they will be updated periodically to include new recommendations and best practices. It features 157,000 square feet of office and laboratory space, classrooms, maker spaces, and common areas, and is home to the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society as well as BC’s Computer Science Department, Human-Centered Engineering Department, and the Shea Center for Entrepreneurship. Watch video

How to Use Green2Go

BC Dining Launches Green2Go

With the significant increase in the amount of single use containers, BC Dining is providing a more sustainable alternative. Launched in Feburary, Green2Go is a reusable to-go container program offered at all three of the main dining halls—Stuart, McElroy, and Lower. Students can take to-go food in a G2G container, which is a BPA-free and made out of 5% recycled #5 plastic. They can be taken anywhere and then turned back to the dining hall to be washed and recirculated.

A centuries-old oak tree on the edge of Boston College’s Brighton Campus will be removed next week due to failing health—but rather than disappear altogether, its trunk will undergo an unusual transformation. 

Ken Packie, a Massachusetts artist who specializes in wood sculptures, has been commissioned by the University to carve the tree’s nearly six-foot-wide base into a three-dimensional portrayal of the Holy Family, celebrating Boston College’s Jesuit Catholic heritage and recognizing the historical significance of the Brighton Campus.

Office of Sustainability Expands Composting Program to Student Dormitories

Previously only offered at the dining halls, the Office of Sustainability is expanding the campus composting initiatives to student dormitories. Starting Feburary 3rd, compost toters will be located outside of most dorms on Lower, Newton, and Upper Campuses. Students will be able to divert more food waste from landfill and all compost will be convereted to fuel to power a waste treatment plant north of Boston.
