Amy Poehler ’93 Tours BC Campus with Sons
When My Mother’s Fleabag members Ella Lowe ’26, Saige Joseph ’28, and Mary Gormly ’29 learned that Poehler would be visiting the Heights, they made it their mission to meet the famous comedian.
Everywhere she goes, the celebrated actor, comedian, podcaster, and BC alum Amy Poehler attracts attention. Somehow, though, Poehler escaped nearly unnoticed while visiting the BC campus on March 26. Nearly.
When current BC students Ella Lowe ’26, Saige Joseph ’28, and Mary Gormly ’29 heard rumblings on social media that the former Saturday Night Live and Parks and Rec star had returned to the Heights with her high school–age sons for a campus tour, they went on a mission to find her.
Like Poehler before them, Lowe, Joseph, and Gormly are all members of the BC improv comedy group My Mother's Fleabag. "We were a little bit on the hunt," Lowe recalled; "there's so many tours going on at once, but we thought, maybe we'll find her."
After searching for a while, the trio finally spotted Poehler in a tour group with several other prospective students and parents, who Lowe said were clearly starstruck. "The tour guide said Amy laughed at one of the jokes she made on the tour," Lowe said, "and it basically made her year."
The students waited for the tour to end, then worked up the courage to approach Poehler. "I was super nervous that we might run into her, but then when we met her, she was so normal," Gormly recalled. "She calmed our nerves because she was so sweet."
"I think I was the first one to be like, 'Amy, we're in My Mother's Fleabag,’” Lowe said. "She was very excited, and was like, 'Oh my God, that's so exciting, I love Fleabag.’"
Poehler introduced the students to her sons, and chatted for a bit about the beauty of BC's campus. Then she asked if the students would like to take a photo together. They posted the resulting selfie to the My Mother's Fleabag Instagram page, where it's racked up almost ten thousand likes.
Lowe said that getting Poehler to attend a My Mother's Fleabag show has been the dream of the group's members for decades. "The alums have been passing the photo around, like, 'no way, someone actually met Amy,'" she said. "It was super cool to finally fulfill that." ◽
