ACC CHAMPIONS! Eagles Down Tar Heels for First ACC Title

GREENSBORO, N.C. - For the first time in program history, Boston College women's lacrosse secured the ACC championship on Sunday afternoon at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte.

The Eagles downed No. 3 seed North Carolina, 11-9, snapping the Tar Heels' run of six straight conference championships. It's the first ACC title in women's program history at BC and the second overall in school history.

Shea Dolce was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting 19 saves in three contests. Belle Smith, Jenn Medjid, Cassidy Weeks and Sydney Scales were named to the all-tournament team.

Trailing 9-6 with 7:56 left in the third period, the twin-sister combo of Cassidy and Courtney Weeks scored back-to-back goals to slice the gap to one heading into the final period.

Kayla Martello started the fourth off with her third goal of the contest to tie things up. Smith's lone score of the game was her most important of the tournament, as she delivered the go-ahead goal to give the Eagles their first lead of the game. Andrea Reynolds, who led the team with four draw controls, stretched the lead to 11-9 with 12:14 left in the contest.

The rest was up to the BC defense, who held all three opponents at the tournament under 10 goals. North Carolina never attempted a shot on goal over the final 12:14, leading to BC running out the clock to seal the victory.

Boston College's defense held UNC scoreless over the final 22:57 of the contest, including the entire fourth quarter. The Eagles allowed just two goals in the third period after UNC scored seven in the first half.

Hunter Roman was all over the place with a team-high three-caused turnovers. She led seven different Eagles with a caused turnover.

Martello led the way with three scores and an assist for four points. Mckenna Davis also tallied four points with one score and three helpers. Cassidy Weeks scored both of her goals in the second half.

Courtney Weeks scored twice with an assist, while Reynolds scored twice as well.

BC will await its seed and opponent for the NCAA Tournament next Sunday, May 7 at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com.
