Walk Across Campus - Fall 2014

Kickoff walks: October 1 at 7:30 a.m. outside Flynn Recreation Complex and 12:00 p.m. outside 129 Lake St.

As our “HEALTHY YOU – Year 5” wellness initiative continues this semester, we will be hosting a fall “Walk”. The Walk Across Campus (WAC) is a two-month HEALTHY YOU team walking program. If you were on a team during the 2013–14 WAC, we encourage you to participate and to use the Fitbit BC purchased for you last year. All 1,400 members and team leaders from the spring 2014 WAC are already on their fall team and will not need to act further to remain on the team.

If you did not participate or receive a Fitbit last year, we’d love to have you join us! Distribution of Fitbits to new participants will begin the week of September 15 (first-come, first-served). For registration directions and Fitbit activation deadlines, visit

The fall “Walk” will be held from October 1 through November 30.  It will be modeled after the spring event:  teams will be comprised of up to 20 employees and each team will have a Team Leader.  New participants will be given a “Fitbit,” a cutting-edge pedometer, at no cost to them.  Returning participants will use the free Fitbit they received in the spring.  We will have some One units as well as Flex units, but numbers are limited.  The Fitbit device tracks steps taken, calories burned, and distance traveled, and the "One" model also tracks flights of stairs. [To learn more visit .]  “Fitbit” will electronically keep track of each team’s activity for the friendly competition, and the Fitbit results will be used to determine winning teams/individuals.

We welcome back all spring teams and their Team Leaders, who did a commendable job motivating their teams.  We are also seeking volunteers who are willing to be Team Leaders of new teams.  The Team Leader roles will be to:
·     Recruit and assemble a team (departmental or otherwise)
·     Lead a walk or other activity each week in October and November
·     Communicate with team members,reminding and motivating them to be active, both with the team and independently
·     Attend a kick-off luncheon to be held in September

If you participated in the spring Walk and will be returning, you should hear from your Team Leader in the next few weeks, as they will be asked to finalize the rosters for existing teams.

If you are a new participant interested injoining a team, or if you would like to be a Team Leader, please send an email to as soon as possible.  This email inbox will be used to capture new participants and form teams during the next few weeks.  Final team rosters will be communicated to Team Leaders in September.
