McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i

These instructions are for Windows 7 users. If you need anti-virus software for Windows Vista, XP, or earlier, please download and install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i.

NOTE: BC faculty, staff, and students can use McAfee virus protection at home. Use the instructions below to download and install it on your home computer.

Before You Install

  1. Print this page (or save it as a PDF) for reference. Some of the steps below will require that you disconnect your computer from the Internet to prevent virus infections while your computer is unprotected.
  2. Download McAfee VirusScan Enterprise to your desktop. When prompted, enter your BC username and password. Save the BC McAfee Antivirus 8.7i.exe installation file to your desktop. Do not install the application at this time.
  3. Disconnect your computer from the Internet — unplug the ethernet cable and/or disconnect from the wireless network.
  4. Quit any open applications.

Install VirusScan 8.7i

IMPORTANT: This installer will automatically remove existing antivirus programs and Windows Defender, as these may interfere with the operation of McAfee 8.7i

  1. Close all applications before beginning this process.
  2. Locate and double-click the BC McAfee Antivirus 8.7i.exe installer (see Figure 1) on your desktop.

    Wait for the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Setup to process (see Figure 2).
    Note: Do not close this window, it will close on its own when the process completes.

  3. VirusScan setup recommends that Windows Defender and other antivirus programs be removed prior to installation (see Figure 3). Click Yes.

  4. You may receive a warning that Windows Defender is turned off (see Figure 4). This is correct. VirusScan contains the same functionality as Windows Defender. Having both programs running on the same computer may cause problems. Ignore the warning.

  5. When the setup window appears (see Figure 5), click Next.

  6. Do the following (see Figure 6):
    1. Under the License expiry type, select Perpetual.
    2. Read and select I accept the terms in the license agreement.
    3. Click OK.

  7. Under Setup Type, select Typical, and then click Next (see Figure 7).

  8. Under Access Protection Level, select Standard Protection, then click Next (see Figure 8).

  9. Click Install (see Figure 9).

    When McAfee VirusScan Enterprise setup has completed successfully, you may receive a message that McAfee is out of date (see Figure 10). This is expected, please do not click the warning but continue with the installation as described below.

  10. Make sure the Update Now and Run On-Demand Scan options are not selected and click Finish (see Figure 11).

  11. The installer will prompt you to restart your computer (see Figure 12).
    Restart your computer by clicking the Start button, then clicking the arrow located next to Shut Down. Select Restart.

After installation

  1. After restart, reconnect your computer to the Internet.
  2. Delete the BC McAfee Antivirus 8.7i.exe installer icon from your desktop.
  3. Click check the VirusScan icon Task Bar Icon in the Task Tray. You may need to expand the Task Tray by clicking the arrow to see the icon (see Figure 13).  If the icon has a red circle with a line through it, call the BC Help Center at 617-552-HELP (4357).

  4. Right-click the VirusScan icon and select Update Now. If you are not able to run the Update, call the BC Help Center at 617-552-HELP.
  5. Right-click My Computer on the desktop and select Scan for Threats. The scan may take as long as an hour to complete.
