The Consequences for Violating Copyright

Criminal and civil penalties may result from copyright violation, alongside disciplinary action by Boston College. Primarily, the negative consequences are financial, often to the tune of several thousand dollars. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has well publicized its campaign to target college campuses for legal action. In June, a fifth wave of 395 "pre-litigation settlement letters" was sent to 19 universities. These letters offer students a chance to settle copyright infringement claims against them at a discounted rate, before a lawsuit is filed.
