Setting up Outlook 2002 to automatically filter spam
Summary:  Learn how to set up Outlook 2002 to automatically filter spam out of your email.

If you receive unwanted email messages from commercial mailers (for example, messages that contain adult content) you can have these messages automatically removed from your Inbox, or have them appear in a particular color so you can quickly find them and move them manually. You can have unwanted email messages automatically moved to a specific folder or have them deleted. You can also create a list of the senders of unwanted email messages and have all messages from those senders removed from your Inbox.

Using Outlook 2002, there are several ways you can automatically filter spam out of your email:

Automatically moving or deleting junk or adult content email

To automatically move or delete junk or adult content email:

  1. Click your Inbox.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Organize.

  3. Click the Junk E-Mail link.
  4. To move or delete junk or adult content email (refer to Figure 2):
    • For either bulleted item, from the Automatically drop-down list, select move.
    • For either bulleted item, from the messages to drop-down list, select a folder. To see a list of all your folders, click Other Folder.

  5. Click Turn on.

Automatically changing the color of junk or adult content email in your Inbox

To automatically change the color of junk or adult content email in your Inbox:

  1. Click your Inbox.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Organize.

  3. Click the Junk E-Mail link.
  4. To change the color of junk or adult content email in your Inbox (refer to Figure 4):
    • For either bulleted item, from the Automatically drop-down list, select color.
    • For either bulleted item, from the messages drop-down list, select a color.

  5. Click Turn on.

Automatically moving or deleting all email from a particular sender

To automatically move or delete all email from a particular sender:

  1. Click your Inbox.
  2. Select a message from the sender whose messages you want to automatically move or delete.
  3. On the Actions menu, point to Junk E-mail, and then click Add to Junk Senders list.

Adding or removing an email address from the list of unwanted email senders

To add or remove an email address from the list of unwanted email senders:

  1. Click your Inbox.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Organize.

  3. Click the Junk E-Mail link.
  4. Click the options link (refer to Figure 6).

  5. To change the commercial emailers list, click Edit Junk Senders.
    The Edit Junk Senders window appears, which allows you to add, edit, or delete senders (refer to Figure 7):

  6. To change the adult content senders list, click Edit Adult Content Senders.
    The Edit Adult Content Senders window appears, which allows you to add, edit, or delete senders (refer to Figure 8):

Making an exception in your junk mail sender's list

To make an exception in your junk mail sender's list:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.
    The Rules Wizard appears (refer to Figure 9):

  2. In the Apply rules in the following order box, click Exception List.
  3. In the Rule description box, click Exception List.
    The Edit Exception List appears (refer to Figure 10):

  4. Click Add.
    The Sender window appears (refer to Figure 11):

  5. Enter the email address you want to make an exception for and click OK.
    Email from the name and domain you enter will appear in your Inbox, even if you have the domain listed in your Junk Senders list.
