Job Fair Information for Managers
Welcome to the Job Fair/Open House resource site for Boston College Managers. We are striving to create ways to assist you in the recruitment process. Two such ways that we have found successful are job fairs and open houses.
Job Fairs
A job fair is an organized event held at the University in which both the hiring department and Human Resource staff participate. Specific openings are advertised, and interested applicants are welcomed to drop by on a specified date between certain hours to interview directly with supervisors, managers, and HR representatives.
We have found that job fairs help expedite the process of hiring, and they allow applicants to learn more about working at Boston College. Job fairs are usually held when a department has many openings that need to be filled. Please contact the Employment Staff for further information.
Open Houses
An open house is an organized event held at the University in which both the hiring department and Human Resource staff participate. While it is similar to a job fair, an open house focuses on educating the public about a specific department. Typically, it is held because a department has several openings.
During an open house, applicants are given an overview of the department, then broken out into smaller groups to review specific areas of the department. An open house may or may not allow time for interviews. Please contact the Employment Staff for further information.
Resources to Help Organize a Job Fair or Open House
Pre-Event Planning and Preparation
Both the hiring department and the Employment Staff contact should print out a Job Fair Checklist to coordinate planning. Managers should also review employment laws and interviewing guidelines in advance of the event:
- Employment Legislation — A summary of the federal laws and guidelines that shape the employment recruitment process
- Legal Guidelines for Interviewing — A summary of questions that can and cannot be asked of applicants
- Legal Guidelines for Interviewing: Chart — The same information as above, but presented in an easy-to-use reference chart
Day of Job Fair/Open House
Applicants should list their names on a Sign-in Sheet as they arrive at the job fair or open house. Multiple copies of the following materials will be needed for applicants:
- Welcoming/Check-in Procedures to hand out as each applicant arrives
- Job Fair Evaluation for applicants to evaluate the job fair process
- The BC Jobs web address to remind applicants about HR website
- Interview Comment Sheet for interviewers to write down comments. Please note that Dining Service uses a slightly different Interview Comment Sheet, which is available below.
Dining Service Job Fairs require some additional materials:
- Important Notes for Dining Service Job Fairs
- Interview Comment Sheet — Dining (multiple copies needed)
- Assessment Categories by Position
- Upcoming Job Fairs/Open House events — (add link to this page)
Pre-made signs to label tables and to provide direction to the entrance, restrooms, or telephones are also available to print out.
