Matt Dunkel | Math Coach, Vassal Lane Upper School
Matt Dunkel believes in the transformative power of education. For over a decade as an administrator and teacher, Matt has helped innovative urban schools to actualize this potential even more fully.
At Beacon Academy, Matt helped low-income students change the trajectory of their lives. As Dean of Students, he coordinated school culture and discipline. As Lead Teacher, he helped students make 2-3 years of math progress in twelve months. In both roles, Matt combined high expectations with holistic supports to help students internalize a new sense of who they were and who they could become.
As Math Coordinator at Prospect Hill Academy (PHA), Matt worked to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This included action planning and professional development to increase instructional rigor and create aligned performancebased assessments. Matt supervised and evaluated eleven teachers at PHA, including weekly cycles of data-driven Collaborative Inquiry for each team.
Matt currently serves as Math Coach at Vassal Lane Upper School (VLUS), a Cambridge Public School. There, he is making professional learning more collaborative through weekly Teacher Rounds for each grade-level team. He is also working to improve the school’s coteaching model by facilitating coplanning between General Educators and Special Educators. Finally, Matt has led many administrative initiatives at VLUS, including schoolwide scheduling, facilitation of the Instructional Leadership Team, and development of a new School Improvement Plan.
Outside of school, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and three-year-old son. Their favorite activities include reading books, building imaginary cities, and bursting into spontaneous dance parties.
