Information on how you can become a bystander trainer

Video credit: Lizzy Barrett, '19

We have a team of approximately 50 Bystander trainers and advocacy team members. At the end of the year, students may apply to fill open slots for the following year.

About Bystander Trainers:

Our research has shown that students who attend a Bystander presentation are more likely to intervene in questionable situations that could lead to sexual assault.  We have also found that the message of Bystander is best received when it is presented by a peer.  This is why Bystander trainers are so important!  Bystander trainers give an hour and fifteen minute long Bystander presentation to peers in classes and residence halls, attend continuing education meetings to gain a broader understanding of sexual assault on college campuses, and serve as role models of proactive Bystanders in everyday life.

About Bystander Advocates:

Our advocacy team is made up of passionate students who want to create change within the Boston College community around sexual violence through putting on programs or through advocacy work to raise awareness. The advocacy team attends the weekly Bystander meeting on Wednesdays but also will meet outside of that time to brainstorm and plan events.

Responsibilities of Bystander Team Memebers:

Our continuing education meetings are on Wednesdays from 7-8pm and all trainers are expected to attend. Our Wednesday meetings provide the space to build community, support each other, discuss current events related to sexual assault, and learn more from guest speakers. Outside of the continuing education commitment, we ask that each Bystander trainer give at least 2 presentations per semester and advocacy team members put on around two events per semester.

Characteristics of Bystander Team Members:

We are looking for students who are:

  • Passionate about sexual assault prevention
  • Personally willing to speak up or intervene in difficult situations
  • Comfortable with public speaking (or willing to learn!)
  • Mature, responsible, and reliable
  • Able to make the time commitment
How to Apply:
