How to use MyBC for your website
As part of your privileges as a Registered Student Organization on campus you have access to and are required to use MyBC. MyBC is a student organization and event management portal system hosted by OrgSync. Each student organization is required to have a presence on MyBC. One of the many tools for organizations within MyBC is website support and hosting. To access this tool on MyBC you must be an administrator of your organization’s MyBC portal or have been given access to the website tool by an administrator. If you have questions about this, please contact the Student Programs Office. If you have access to the website tool, you will see it listed on the left side tool bar within your organization’s portal.
If your organization has not yet created a MyBC website you will be asked to create one using an existing template. Once your website is created using the template, you can choose to work with that template to develop your site using the instructions below or you can develop your own site from scratch using HTML. The choice is yours.
Planning Your Website
Building a new website or converting an existing website is generally a significant project. It requires a commitment of your organization's time and resources for the initial creation process, plus a permanent commitment of your site manager's time to maintaining the site. We recommend that you think about, and if possible talk to, the people you think will be using your site. Learn what information they expect your site to provide, plus when and how often will it need to be updated. Before you start building, plan how your site will be organized into sections and how the navigation will work to get people to the information they are looking for. MyBC provides every organization with a solution to creating a public website hosted by MyBC that is easy to maintain and update. With the website builder, you may create a website that automatically syncs with your organizations MyBC account (as news, events and more are created in your account and made public, your website will immediately reflect the changes. You may integrate your site with almost any tool within MyBC including:

Using the Website Builder:
When you first click on the website link in the Organization Tool Bar, you will be prompted to Set Website with Default Template.
There are five main sections of the MyBC website builder tool.
- Template Elements
- Files / CSS
This section controls the shared portions of your website that appear on every page. The Meta/Head, Header, and Footer are all separated out so you can create powerful websites without having to edit dozens of pages to change one link or chunk of text.
Meta / Head:
<title> controls the title of your website as it appears in your browser and bookmarks
<title> My Website Title </title>
<link>allows you to link to a stylesheet containing CSS
<link rel='stylesheet' type='text/css' media='all' href='http://mysite.com/my_css.css' />
The header section of your website typically includes your logo, top navigation links, and any other content you want repeated on every page of your site. This section should include the opening <body> HTML tag.
The footer section of your website typically includes any links, site credits, copyright information, and a link to MyBC. The closing </body>tag should be included in this section. Just like the HEADER section, this section will repeat on every page of your site.
Every website consists of different pages. With the MyBC website builder tool, you can build and edit an unlimited number of pages, and each page can have its own URL such as
To See Existing Pages:
Once inside the “Pages” tab, there will be a list of pages that already exist in your site. Every website comes preloaded with several pages for you to start with and edit.
You will notice that there is a series of options View | Edit | Rename | Clone | Delete
View: Opens the live version of the page in a new browser window.
Edit: Opens the current page and allows you to edit the content using the WYSIWYG editor or edit the HTML source code directly.
Rename: Renames the current page. Warning: Changing the page name might break any links to it. Be sure to update any links pointing that page.
Clone: Makes a copy of the page. This is very useful if you want to make several pages with similar content but don’t want to recreate each page over and over.
Delete: Deletes the page from your site. Once you delete the page you cannot recover it.
Quick Page URL:
You can easily create a link to any page using this feature. Just copy and past the [[page:page_name_here]] link to any Header, Footer, or Page content within your site and the link will be created without having to type the full URL yourself. For example, you would normally have to type out: http://mycampus.orgsync.com/page_name but with the Quick URL you can simple use [[page:page_name]]
To Create a New Page:
Once inside the “Pages” tab, click the button on the top left labeled “New Page”
The page name will prompt you to name the page. The name should always be safe for URLs, meaning it should not have spaces and use underscores instead, and should not contain any special characters like #!*% etc…
You can edit the content of the page in the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. This tool is very helpful because you will be able to create HTML content without knowing any HTML code. On the flipside, if you DO know HTML, you can easily edit it by clicking the source button
The WYSIWYG editor has a myriad of tools at your disposal. They should all look very familiar if you’ve ever used a word editing tool. You can adjust color, links, font size, bold, italics, copy, paste, etc… More information about the editor we use can be found at: http://ckeditor.com/
What are MyBC Modules?
We use the term “modules” to mean any feature that grabs information from your MyBC portal such as events, news, officers, etc… This is the real heart and soul of the website builder tool. Using these features will allow your public website to be instantly updated with information entered in your organization portal.
To insert an MyBC module into your page click on the OS Modules button:

From there you can simply click the module you want to include and it will insert the correct code into your page. Don’t forget to hit save!
Pages, Images, and Files
The same principal as the MyBC modules also applies to insert pages, images, and files.
Once you’ve created any pages or uploaded images or files, you can generate a quick link to it by selecting the dropdown list and clicking the desired item. This will generate the code such as [[page:home]] or [[image:splash_graphic]]
This is very useful and time saving because you will never need to know the full URL path of your files and reduces the potential for typos.
Adding and uploading images to your website is very easy and is just like adding and editing pages.
First, you will choose a name for your image. Remember to use URL-friendly names with underscores as spaces and not using any special characters.
Notice there are four buttons for all your images: View | Rename | Replace | Delete
View: Open the image in a new window in your browser
Rename: Rename the image. Warning: Changing an image name will break existing links to it. Be sure to update all links to that image elsewhere on your site and CSS files.
Replace: If you want to replace an image, but not break the link or rename it, you can simply replace the image and all the links / URLS will remain the same.
Delete: This will delete your image permanently. This cannot be undone.
To Add a New Image:
Simply click the New Image button located at the top of the “Images” tab.
Files / CSS:
Notice the five buttons listed to the right of each file: View | Rename | Replace | Delete
View: Opens the file in a new window in your browser. Depending on the file type, this might prompt your browser to download the file. With something like a .txt or .css file, it may simply just load inside your browser.
Rename: Renames the file name. Warning: Renaming a file will break any links to it elsewhere on your website.
Replace: If you want to replace a file, but not break the link or rename it, you can simply replace the file and all the links / URLS will remain the same.
Delete: This will delete your file permanently. This cannot be undone.
Editing a File:
The settings tab allows you to control the URL of your website and allows you to reset the content of your site.
Change the URL of the site: You can change the URL of your website at any time. Changing this URL means any links to it on the internet might break. For example, if your website is http://myorgsite.orgsync.com/org/studentgov changing it to http://myorgsite.orgsync.com/org/student_government would break any links to http://myorgsite.orgsync.com/org/studentgov.
Requesting a Web Alias
Clubs can request a web alias to have a shorter URL to give out for their home page. Use our Web Alias Request form. Aliases are generally all lower case and three to twelve letters long with a form like: www.bc.edu/something. You can request an alias as soon as your home page is in place.
