HONG KONG (10-15-15)—More than 100 members of the Boston College community, accompanied by numerous Hong Kong civic leaders, were on hand October 15 for the awarding of the President’s Medal for Excellence to Victor and Julia Fung, P’99. University President William P. Leahy, S.J., conferred the honor to the couple at a gala dinner held at the Asia Society in Hong Kong.

The President’s Medal was established in 1996 to honor individuals who have distinguished themselves through personal and professional achievements that exemplify the University’s motto, “Ever to Excel.”

It was the first time the medal has been awarded outside of the United States.

Victor Fung, group chairman of the Fung Group and honorary chairman of Li & Fung Limited, and his wife, Julia, who serves as chair of the Fung Hon Chu Education Trust Fund, received the award in recognition of their lifelong support of education.

Citing the Fungs’ extraordinary leadership and the long-held ties between Hong Kong and the Society of Jesus, Fr. Leahy expressed gratitude for all that they have accomplished in their lives, including work, family, community and service.

“Gratitude is one of the great virtues in our Catholic faith,” said Fr. Leahy, “and it’s important that we as humans understand that to be grateful and to give to others is a calling that each of us has. So, gratitude to you, Julia and Victor, for what you have done and—through you—what others have been enabled to do.”

In his remarks, Victor Fung reflected upon the special meaning for him and his wife to receive this honor from BC—particularly in Hong Kong:

“I humbly accept this medal, not only on behalf of my whole family, but, I would say, on behalf of all the Boston College alumni and friends in Hong Kong and this region,” said Fung.  “I know that this honor really belongs to all of you, because you have all done so much in your own way to contribute to this great University. I know one of the very important long-term objectives of Boston College is to reach out to the global community, and the fact that you’re doing this in Hong Kong now really symbolizes your own desire to reach outside of Boston and North America. I see Boston College as representing the best of Catholic education and the best of the Jesuits, who have already done so much to contribute to education around the world and especially here in Asia.”

In addition to Victor and Julia’s son Stephen, who graduated from Boston College in 1999, four members of the extended Fung family attended the University.

The event was held as a part of the Boston College Global Forum, a series of activities for alumni and friends being held throughout the month in Asia.
