Use abbreviations and acronyms sparingly. Spell out the first reference with acronym in parentheses if it recurs throughout a document.

The Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry (IREPM) will hold an open house in January. Anyone interested in learning more about IREPM should plan on attending.

Common abbreviations include:

p.m., a.m. (lowercase with periods)

S.J. (uppercase, Society of Jesus)

U.S. (no space between U.S., use periods)

S. M. Smith (given names; when you have two or more initials, use a space between letters)

Do not use postal abbreviations in text.

Philadelphia, Pa. (not Philadelphia, PA)

Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Utah are never abbreviated.

See the Chicago Manual for a full list of state abbreviations.The abbreviation of "Massachusetts" is Mass. Use “MA” for postal code only. Do not abbreviate the state name if it is used without a city or town.

You must be 18 years old to vote in Massachusetts.
