Thanksgiving Day Host Program

Even though Thanksgiving was over two months ago, the OISS would like to take this opportunity to thank all who participated in the OISS 17th annual Thanksgiving Day Host Program.  In order to experience the traditional American holiday, interested BC international students were matched with BC faculty and administrators.  This year we had many students and hosts that had not participated in the past.  By hosting international students for the day, members of the BC faculty and administration were able to share their families’ holiday traditions and enjoy learning about the students’ home countries and cultures.   Based on feedback we have received from participants, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the experience.  In the evaluations of the program, many of the students expressed immense gratitude towards their hosts.  They liked trying new foods and making new friendships.

When asked what he liked most about the program, one student responded that “it gives an opportunity to the international students to share the real life of America. But also it breaks the boundaries of nationality in which it makes the international students feel at home… The program brings love at its practical level.”  Many of the hosts said that their families and friends also enjoyed the cultural exchange.  One host said that it was nice to share the important holiday of Thanksgiving with others who do not celebrate the holiday in their country.”  Another host said that he felt that the students “almost feel like at home with family & friends, though away from home.”  Thanks again to all of the hosts and students that participated in this years Thanksgiving Host Program.  We look forward to running the program next Thanksgiving.
