Google Drive “Team Drives” will be Renamed to “Shared Drives”

Team Drives is a shared space where teams can easily store, search, and access their files anywhere, from any device. Starting May 21, Google will begin the process of renaming the “Team Drives” feature of Google Drive to “Shared drives.” The functionality of Team Drives will remain the same.

What’s Changing?

  • Drive on the web: Beginning June 3, in the left hand side panel on Google Drive for the web, “Team Drives” will be renamed to “Shared drives.”
  • Drive on mobile:
    • iOS users will see the name change beginning on May 21, 2019.
    • Android users will see the name change beginning on May 28, 2019.
  • Drive File Stream: Beginning May 31, 2019, "Team Drives" will be renamed to "Shared drives" in the Drive File Stream navigation. Any desktop shortcuts that link to content inside of shared drives will need to be updated. You may be required to update the settings on your devices.

Why it’s Changing

Google received feedback that many people used Team Drives in instances that did not involve teams, so changing the name to “Shared drives” makes it easier to understand how they can be used.
