System Extension Block Message with High Sierra 10.13

when installing mac software downloaded from bc

When installing software downloaded from Boston College for the first time on a Mac with High Sierra 10.13 or higher, you will get an extension block alert after installation (see Figure 1 with example from Sophos & Figure 2 with an example from Cisco).

If you get an alert like one of these (see Figure 1 & 2), do the following:

  1. Within 30 minutes after installing the software, open System Preferences.
  2. Double-click Security & Privacy.
  3. On the General tab, click Allow next to "System software from developer 'software_name' was blocked from loading." (see Figure 3 with example from Sophos)
    Note: You may need to click the lock on the bottom left before you can make these changes.
