You will be able to send and receive email immediately, but it can take up to a month for stable functionality. This is due to the slow initial "sync" with your Gmail account. During the first month, you may experience anomalies and poor search results.

We recommend you use the web to access gmail. Login at


Configure Outlook with BC G Suite (Windows)

Use G Suite Sync for Microsoft Outlook® (GSSMO) to sync mail, calendar events, contacts, and notes between Outlook and BC G Suite.

System Requirements: Outlook 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003. GSSMO is not supported for the Mac.

Some things to note when using Outlook with Google:

  • Avoid using GSSMO from more than 1 device
  • Keep your Outlook data file (old .PST) under 20 GB
  • Keep your Inbox under 100 messages
  • Don't organize folders under the Inbox folder

Setup G Suite Sync for Microsoft Outlook® (GSSMO)

Follow Google's help page to setup GSSMO & when prompted, enter your & select your email address.

Important Notes about GSSMO:

  • G Suite Sync will initially download up to 1GB of email from the G Suite Server to your desktop. Learn how to change this setting.
  • Your journal entries will not synchronize with G Suite.

IMAP Gmail Settings - Apple Mail, Thunderbird & More

IMAP configuration will sync your BC email to clients such as Apple Mail, Thunderbird, and more. It will not sync your BC calendar or contacts. Learn more about using an IMAP email client with BC Gmail.

setup instructions

1. Enable IMAP on in your Gmail Settings:
  1. Log in to the Gmail account for which you wish to configure an IMAP account.
  2. Click the Gear Icon to access Gmail Settings.
  3. Under the Forwarding and Pop/IMAP tab, choose Enable IMAP. Select Save changes.
2. Setup BC Gmail for email software using the following settings:
  • General Settings
    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Email address or username:
    • Password: Secondary Password
  • Incoming Mail Settings
    • Email address or username:
    • Incoming mail server =
    • Port = 993
    • SSL should be enabled.
    • Authentication = password
  • Outgoing Mail Settings
    • Email address or username:
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP) =
    • Port = 587
    • SSL should be enabled
    • Authentication = password

Apple's Calendar

Use these instructions to configure Apple's Calendar to use your BC Google Calendar.

Synching Apple's Calendar with your BC Google Apps Account

  1. Open Calendar.
  2. In the toolbar, click Calendar, then Preferences.
  3. Click the Accounts tab.
  4. In the accounts pane on the left, click the + button to add an account.
  5. Enter the following information:
    • Account Type: Google
    • Email Address:
    • Password: Secondary Password

Syncing additional calendars with Apple's Calendar and other iOS devices

By default, any calendars that appear in the My calendars section on the web, as well as the Contacts’ birthdays and events calendar, will be synced. Follow these steps to sync any additional calendars, or remove any of My calendars from syncing to Apple's Calendar:

  1. Go to:
  2. Select or deselect the calendars you’d like displayed.
  3. Click the save button.
  4. Refresh Calendar, or close and restart in order to see your new selection.

*These settings will apply to any device you sync using CalDAV, such as your iPhone or other iOS device.

Apple's Contacts

Use CardDAV to sync your Google Contacts with your Mac.

Note: CardDAV is supported on Mac OS X 10.7 and above. 

  1. On your Mac, go to Applications > Contacts.
  2. In the Contacts application, go to Contacts > Preferences > Accounts > + In the window that pops up, enter the following:
    • Account type: Google
    • Username:
    • Password: Secondary Password
    • Server address:
  3. Your contacts will now start syncing from your Google account with your Mac. Any new contacts you make on your Mac will sync with your Google account, and any new contacts in your Google account will sync with your Mac.

Configure the BC Directory - Thunderbird & Apple's Contacts

Step 1:

  • Apple's Contacts: Open Contacts > Preferences > click the + button to add an account > Other Account
  • Thunderbird: Open Thunderbird > Preferences > Composition > Addressing > Edit Directories > Add

Step 2:

Enter the following information: 

  • Drop down: LDAP
  • Name: Boston College
  • Base DN or Search Base: dc=bc,dc=edu
  • Hostname or Server:
  • In the Port number box, make sure it is: 636
  • Check "Use secure connection" (SSL)
