Message from BC Libraries

Tom Wall
Tom Wall, University Librarian

Dear Graduate Students,

Welcome to Boston College and its Libraries. Our library workforce is knowledgeable and prepared to collaborate with you across all areas of research.  We maintain superb collections, we are comfortable with exploring new and different approaches for research, teaching and learning, and we are risk tolerant. Sure, some nascent ideas may seem like nonsense, but we are not judgmental and instead thrive as fellow explorers in BC’s ecosystem of ideas.  The Libraries nurture all ideas, from the risky to the sublime, as part of our collective formation and quest Ever to Excel across all horizons.

We in the Libraries are committed to providing you with the highest level of scholarly support and resources, from our expertise and assistance in your use of library facilities and services to the many collections and unique materials found throughout our eight libraries and online. Our collections include more than 3.6 million print and electronic books, nearly 40,000 journals, 750 databases of full text articles and citations, and a digital library of 30,000 scanned and born-digital text, datasets, images and audio files.

Most library staff have an advanced degree, so we fully share the excitement and challenges you face as a graduate student. We offer in-person and virtual research services, including in-depth individual consultations. Our subject specialists are willing and able partners in your scholarly pursuits. We offer study and meeting space, as well as digital support and specialized computer applications and equipment. We hope that you find the Libraries’ Services for Graduate Students site particularly useful. Collaborating widely across the University, we welcome ideas and suggestions for new initiatives and projects, from traditional teaching to digital scholarship. We are committed to making the Libraries a welcoming and responsive environment for you.

Your input will always be valued and utilized to help us better serve you. I continue to meet with a variety of user groups, including undergraduates, graduates, and the Faculty Advisory Committee. BC Libraries are not simply repositories for books. We are collectively committed to being an essential component of your academic life.

Wishing you great success,

Tom Wall

The Boston College Libraries Mission

As intellectual and cultural centers and community spaces for Boston College, the Libraries acquire, preserve, and facilitate access to world-class collections, engage in collaborations that benefit scholarship, teaching, and learning, and support student formation and discernment in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. We achieve this by being an agile organization, offering dynamic user spaces, providing excellent collections and services that anticipate the evolving needs of diverse academic communities, and partnering with faculty and students–from the discovery of relevant resources to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge.
