I am pleased to share with you the Office for Institutional Diversity (OID) Report, a periodic e-mail update on our recent achievements and ongoing work.

I would also like to bring your attention to a special feature now on the OID website welcoming new AHANA faculty to Boston College. The site, as always, highlights individuals and programs that are advancing the University's interest in building an inclusive and diverse community, and includes information about diversity programming on campus, and links to material of related interest. University affiliates

The Office for Institutional Diversity continues to field inquiries about its University Affiliates Program, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and is believed to be one of only a few such programs in the country. According to OID Executive Director Richard Jefferson, an estimated 213 AHANA professional staff have participated in the Affiliates program, which offers mentoring and a range of other opportunities to individuals interested in broadening their knowledge of University operations, enhancing their visibility and professional skills, and expanding their prospects for promotion and upward mobility. A 10-year report undertaken by the Human Resources Department that looked at participants' career development (as measured by opportunities for promotion and salary increases) strongly suggests that the mobility objectives of the program have been met, said Jefferson. New initiatives

OID has launched a coordinated effort to collaborate with vice presidents and deans to enhance campus diversity; strengthened its relationship with the Office of the Provost; continued to work closely with seven University affinity groups; and bolstered ongoing outreach and communications efforts such as the 2011 community building luncheon. Affirmative action plans and goals

At the start of its 2012 fiscal year, Boston College employed 3,853 full- and part-time faculty and staff. That included 2,622 non-faculty employees, 1,377 (53 percent) of whom were women (the same percentage as in the previous year) and 567 (22 percent) of whom were minority (a slight decrease from the year before).  The minority distribution included 204 (7.8 percent) blacks/African Americans; 183 (7.0 percent) Hispanics/Latinos; 169 (6.4 percent) Asians; 10 (0.8 percent) American Indians, and 4 (0.3 percent) who identified with two or more races.
