Data Warehouse or Data Mart?
bc data warehouse
The BC data warehouse is frequently described as having two separate systems: the data warehouse, and the data mart. When described separately:
- The data warehouse refers to a system put into place in 2003. It is used by a wide variety of BC employees who access the system using Oracle Discoverer. The system was built to provide daily reporting from the university mainframe (UIS.) Data warehouse reports tend to be operational, and users tend to be familiar with UIS processes.
- The data mart was moved into production in 2010. It is only accessed by Institutional Research who use Cognos to build a variety of reports used around the university. Data mart reports tend to be cross-functional and analytical. Since most data mart reports are run on university census dates, the data in the system is only refreshed every other month.
