Beyond Ricci

History professor Fr. Jeremy Clarke, S.J., was funded by an ATIG grant to create a website that would introduce readers to the Jesuitana Collection at the Burns Library. Because Fr. Clarke's expertise is Chinese history, he chose to focus on rare books written about China by Jesuit missionaries and to make digitized versions of several books available to the public online for the first time. The result is an engaging and visually rich resource for scholars, teachers, and students to explore East-West cultural exchange in the early modern period.

IDeS worked closely with Fr. Clarke throughout the project, providing project management and consulting to help move the site from early conceptualization through final proofing. IDeS did this by facilitating communication with an outside web developer, coordinating with the Boston College library staff who digitized the books, and overseeing the process of organizing and uploading content as it was developed. Fr. Clarke was also intentional about including his students in they project, particularly in creating content for an exhibition of selected books that took place at the Burns Library. The finished website provides a unique means for viewers from all over the world to engage with these rare books and to trace the important cultural pathways between East and West created by Jesuits and their books.
