BCPD Receives Accrediation

The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission formally accredited the Boston College Police Department earlier this month making BCPD the 9th campus law enforcement department to become accredited in Massachusetts.   To achieve this professional milestone, BCPD demonstrated its compliance with over 280 national standards and “best-practices” through its policies and procedures.  An assessment team assigned by the Commission conducted an on-site review in November and recommended that the BCPD be awarded accreditation.

Areas reviewed included patrol operations, administrative procedures, recruitment and selection, training and professional development, victim assistance, fiscal management, discipline, performance evaluation, crime prevention and investigations.  In Massachusetts, over 170 police departments are participating in the accreditation process and are at various stages in their efforts to achieve accreditation with 50 being fully accredited.

John King, Director of Public Safety and Chief of the Boston College Police said, “The journey to Accreditation began over three years ago and we achieved an earlier milestone of Certification in April of 2013.  Nearly every member of the BCPD staff contributed to the achievement of Accreditation either through researching or writing policies or by providing important feedback during policy comment periods.  Every member of the department can take great pride in the fact that the department has been evaluated against a body of professional standards”.  King credited BCPD Accreditation Manager Lieutenant Laurene Spiess for her in-depth knowledge of accreditation requirements and for preparing the department for the formal assessment.

The BCPD will remain accredited for a three-year period and will be required to ensure that all policies and procedures are reviewed on a scheduled basis and that new policies meet relevant standards.  The department will be re-assessed in 2017.

BCPD Lieutenant Laurene Spiess and Detective Sergeant David Flaherty display cruiser decal commemorating the department’s achievement of accreditation.  All BCPD vehicles will display these in the weeks ahead.
