About The Arts Council

boston college arts council

The arts have the unique ability to teach and communicate in ways that other intellectual activities cannot. Visually, musically and physically, they challenge our thinking, touch our hearts and connect us through collaborative action. Whether it is reflecting upon the impact of the arts in the lecture halls and museums, or participating in the very act of creation in our rehearsal rooms, studios and stages, artistic activities exercise the critical and aesthetic thought processes that we value so highly in our students.  Participation in art and performance promotes a sense of community and empathy with the human condition that connects us both culturally and spiritually. These artistic pursuits are essential to the formation of the whole person and fundamental to a dynamic university environment.

The mission of the Boston College Arts Council is to encourage advocacy, enhancement and visibility for the arts through three main channels:

  1.  Increasing the prominence of the arts at Boston College, both on and off campus.   This is achieved through social media, online and email marketing, print marketing, meeting with administrators (BOC, Deans, Student Affairs, etc.) and community-based arts events (predominately the Arts Festival).
  2.  Fostering both the artistic growth of BC artists and their personal development. Our student formation focuses on an artist’s entire self and is achieved by providing role models through our Arts Awards program, master classes with professional artists, the Prison Arts Outreach program, and the Arts and Social Responsibility Project (ASRP).
  3.  Improving opportunities for BC artists.  Arts opportunities on and off campus include career initiatives (e.g. Career Night for the Arts, iTVFest), networking events with industry specialists and alumni, and arts space planning (advocacy and actual planning).

A committee of Boston College faculty and administrators, the BC Arts Council represents all of the academic departments in the arts as well as student organizations, the Alumni Association, and the Center for Student Formation. The Executive Committee of the council meets each month to discuss the state of the arts, current Arts Council projects, and issues facing students and faculty in the arts at Boston College. These meetings foster collaboration among the arts departments and inspire new projects. Several subcommittees that meet occasionally include – Alumni & Careers, Technology & the Arts, Awards, Arts Festival Programming, and the Arts Space Task Force. All of the faculty and professionals serving on these committees make up the Arts Council Network, which meets once a semester to network, discuss current programs, and present ideas. The Arts Council Network also includes interested faculty, professionals, and administrators in the arts departments and from around the University.

The Office of the Arts Council comprises one professional program administrator and festival director, two graduate assistants, five undergraduate assistants, two student festival coordinators, and several interns and volunteers for the festival.
