PRESS RELEASE

Chief Rabbi David Rosen, new President of IJCIC

August 11, 2005

New York – Rabbi David Rosen of the American Jewish Committee has been appointed President of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC).

“I am grateful to my colleagues in all the Jewish organizations that make up IJCIC, for the confidence they have placed in me in electing me to this position, which is both a great privilege and a real challenge” said Rabbi Rosen, AJC’s International Director of Interreligious Affairs, a position he will continue to hold.

IJCIC represents organized world Jewry in its relations with other world religious bodies, such as the Vatican.  Rabbi Rosen met with Pope Benedict XVI as part of the IJCIC delegation in June.

The President of IJCIC is considered the most authoritative official position for interreligious relations in the Jewish world.

“Understanding and cooperation between religious communities and their leadership is more crucial than ever for the well-being of society,” said Rabbi Rosen. “The Jewish community has an essential role to play as both contributor and beneficiary.”

Rabbi Rosen,  former Chief Rabbi of Ireland, is one of the most prominent Jewish figures in interreligious relations. He served on the Bilateral Commission of the State of Israel and the Holy See that established full relations between the two and is a member of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s Commission for Dialogue with the Holy See. He is an International President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace and Honorary President of the International Council of Christians and Jews. He serves on the Executive of the World Congress of Imams and Rabbis and the World Economic Forum’s C100 for the promotion of relations between Islam and the West.
