The law of Land and Environment has become a significant national and international sphere of professional practice, in both public and private settings. The student experience of Boston College Law School's
Land and Environmental Program typically begins with the Environmental Law Society’s hosting of the welcoming introductory Barbecue Reception for students

interested in land and environmental law in September of the first year, and ends in the third year with the opportunity for a special project, like Environmental Law-Teaching in the University’s College of Arts & Sciences, the National Environmental Moot Court competition, the Testimony Project,
or other public interest projects, or—by adding two semesters—a dual degree program awarding a Boston College JD and a Tufts University MA in urban planning and environment. The Certificate in Land & Environmental Law is awarded at graduation at the end of the third year to students who have compiled required credits and a project in the field.

In all of its elements, the Land & Environmental Law Program is designed to encourage service and train professionals in areas of increasingly critical importance to the lives and prosperity of people around the nation and the world, and to sustainability of the land, air, and water resources which support the myriad interlocking ecosystems that constitute life on the planet.
Development planning needs to implement practical sustainability values and skills in order to meet increasing needs for human accommodations to the resource pressures and interconnected environmental challenges that face us in the 21st century.
