Semester Abroad

BC Approved Programs are programs that are either run by Boston College or are externally approved for course credit. BC students enrolling in these programs will get course credit for the work they do abroad. Learn more about BC Approved Programs.

What is a "Non-Approved Program"?

Non-Approved programs are study abroad programs that are not currently approved for credit at BC, though they may be approved for credit at other academic institutions. The following programs are study abroad programs that have a strong Environmental Studies focus, but are not currently approved with the BC Office of International Programs. STUDENTS INTERESTED IN ATTENDING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS MUST FIRST PETITION FOR APPROVAL WITH OIP.

According to the OIP website:

With over 70 BC programs and nearly 100 approved external programs, students are expected to first consider a BC or external approved program. If a student cannot find a BC or approved external program that meets their academic needs, he or she may petition the OIP to approve a program not currently listed. Students must have a strong academic rationale for choosing a program currently not approved. Students are required to meet with the OIP advisor for their chosen region (see “Contact Us”) prior to submitting a petition, to discuss the case and obtain access to the petition documents. Petitions are approved on a case-by-case basis. If granted approval, the program is administered as an approved external program.

*Note: Some abroad experiences run by programs like SEA Semester and SIT Study Abroad have been approved, but other abroad experiences run by these organizations may still require petition.
