American Studies Senior Seminar
In your senior year, you must enroll in the course designated as the American Studies Senior Seminar. The topic of the seminar, an interdisciplinary course housed in one of the major cooperating departments, varies every year. For the 2020-2021 academic year, the seminar will be offered in Fall 2020 and taught by Christina Klein of the English Department. The course is required for completion of the minor.
ENGL 551301: Transnational American Studies (Fall 2020)
What happens when “foreign” people, texts, and ideas enter the United States? What happens when “American” people, texts, and ideas are consumed by others around the world? What happens when distinctions between “American” and “foreign” break down? This course explores diverse topics in American history and culture from a transnational perspective. Topics covered include: immigration, imperialism, wars, borders, cosmopolitanism, and cultural hybridity. Culminates in a substantial research project.
