I want to be a student mentor because I would love to get more involved with the History Department and also pass on what I've learned to underclassmen. As someone who started as undecided, added a Poli Sci major, added History as a second major, and then switched History to my primary major, I think I have a unique experience that runs the gambit of involvement in the History Department. Whether it's helping someone who doesn't know if they want to do History at all, or giving course registration advice to a die-hard History major, I will be able to relate and cultivate advice towards different audiences. I wanted to be a History major because it's been an interest of mine since reading the Magic Treehouse books as a kid. I didn't go start college with a declared major because I wanted to experience a wide variety of fields before I decided, but I ultimately came back to History.

Although I loved my history and social studies classes in high school, I came into BC undeclared. After taking a history elective freshman year, I decided I wanted to add History as a minor...and then as a secondary major...and now it's my primary major. Whether you've just started to think about joining the History department or you're already deadset on it as your major, I'm happy to chat about next steps and recommendations. Wherever you're at in your History journey, I've been there! I'm also a Political Science major and Management and Leadership minor, so if you're curious about how to balance different fields, feel free to reach out. You can always shoot me an email at lambac@bc.edu and I'd love to either answer your questions via email or set up a zoom/coffee chat!

Why I want to be a mentorI am interested in being a student mentor because I remember the value of talking other student mentors to learn more about the history department. Having the opportunity to learn from upperclassmen majors was tremendously useful and I am hoping to pay this forward by becoming a mentor myself. Now that I have taken a variety of courses from different history professors, as well as getting the chance the study abroad, I feel like I can speak to the major, department, study abroad, and being a double major in a nonhumanities department. I came to BC as a history major and this was because I was always interested by how unlike other majors which may be “objective,” history is subjective in the sense that there are there are so many ways to interpret historical contexts and situations. I think being able to triangulate these perspectives with the understanding that one isn’t necessarily “more right” than another is something really unique to history and an important skill to have in other aspects of life.

I'm interested in being a student mentor because history is my secondary major. I don't have a faculty advisor so I've appreciated the advice from other history majors which has helped me choose classes and I want to do something similar. My hometown has lots of history, particularly in the areas of WWII and environmental justice, which I've learned more about through my classes. My strength lies in helping others find commonalities like these between their courses and their lived experiences. I've always been interested in history but after taking a history elective called Luck and Superstition my spring semester freshman year, I realized the historical areas that interested me the most even in high school circled around the Cold War, patriotism, and religion. I wanted to continue learning about the many perspectives surrounding these topics through BC's history courses.

I’ve always enjoyed history but after taking a history elective spring semester freshman year, I realized not only did I want to study history but also how certain topics like the Cold War, patriotism, and religion interest me the most and have appeared frequently throughout my life. If you're interested in these topics or history in general, I'm always open to discussion! My hometown has lots of history relating to the World Wars and environmental justice, which I've gained a deeper understanding about through my history classes here at BC. I love helping others find commonalities like these between their courses and their lived experiences. I hope I can help other students appreciate how connected we are to history everyday.
