Eagles top Northeastern, 5-1, to claim sixth Frozen Four berth

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 1 Boston College women's hockey team punched its ticket to its sixth Frozen Four in program history – and its fifth in the last six seasons – with a 5-1 win over No. 6 Northeastern today at Kelley Rink. The victory sent the Eagles through to the national semifinals next Friday, where they will face Clarkson, who upset No. 4 Quinnipiac, 1-0, on the road earlier today.

Tori Sullivan scored two goals in today's win, converting one each in the first and second periods. For the second game in a row, the duo of Alex Carpenter and Haley Skarupa combined on multiple goals for the Eagles. Carpenter netted two goals and added an assist, while Skarupa added one goal and collected three assists.

QUOTABLES
Boston College head coach Katie Crowley
"I can't say enough about how our team performed under those circumstances. I thought, after the first little bit with a few jitters there, we really started playing the way we normally play. I'm really proud of them and what they've accomplished this year and I hope it continues next weekend."

"We just tried to stay within ourselves and not get too excited and not get too down about anything. That's been the focus the last couple of weeks for us. You can get really excited in these big games and be too nervous or too antsy with the puck. Our players adjusted well and were able to stay calm, stay cool and be collected when they were in pressure situations."

"(The third line has) been unbelievable. They've sparked our team at times when we were just a little flat. They give us some energy. They're fast, they're quick and they play the game the right way – the way we ask them to play. I was happy to see that they were able to put two in today, that Tori (Sullivan) was able to put two in today. I've talked about it before. She got put into center halfway through this year. I think she's done a tremendous job against any line that's come up against her. Overall, that line knows how to spark energy and get our team going and they're huge in that."

Boston College forward Tori Sullivan
"We were able to get lines out there right away and keep our feet moving. And it's always nice that we can get three lines rolling because we're so deep, keep pressure on them and get offensive opportunities on three lines. It really helps out with the flow of the game, and we're able to capitalize on their mistakes and get a couple in."

Boston College defenseman Megan Keller
"We try not worry about individual players, but (Kendall Coyne) is one you kind of have to look out for. Her speed. We talked about staying with her, always having an eye out for her and skating with her."

"We have some great forwards up there that can score goals, but we tried to get rebounds out there so any shot from the point is always good."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st, 00:50 // 1-0 – BC GOAL – On a line change, Kenzie Kent played the puck up through center ice to Alex Carpenter. Carpenter skated in and put a sinking wrist shot on target, and the puck found space between Husky goaltender Brittany Bugalski's pads as she slid backwards. Originally credited to Megan Keller who came in hard on the play, Carpenter netted her 42nd goal of the season.
  • 1st, 16:54 // 2-0 – BC GOAL – On another line change, Keller played Haley Skarupa up through the neutral zone and into the NU end. The goaltender made the save in Skarupa's shot, but the rebound landed right in front just beyond her diving reach, allowing Tori Sullivan to drive in hard and poke it home for the 2-0 lead.
  • 2nd, 12:51 // 3-0 – BC GOAL – Grace Bizal played it up along the boards to Alex Carpenter, who skated in and picked up Skarupa trailing the play. Carpenter laid the puck off to Skarupa coming in through the slot where she got off a wrister that beat Bulgalski blocker side for the 3-0 lead.
  • 3rd, 1:54 // 4-0 – BC GOAL - Sullivan broke up NU's entry pass just inside the Eagles' blue line, turned around and started a 3-on-2 with Meghan Grieves leading the way through neutral ice. Grieves ripped a shot from near the edge of the faceoff circle and Bulgalski made the save but left the rebound right in front as Sullivan again came in and potted it home.
  • 3rd, 17:46 // 5-0 – BC GOAL (SHG ENG) – With Bulgalski out of the net and the Huskies benefitting from two extra attackers on the ice because of a power-play, Keller broke up the play deep in the Eagles' zone and pushed the puck up ahead to Skarupa. Skarupa then sent the puck cross-ice and deep into Northeastern's end, where Carpenter skated in, picked up the rebound off the boards and put hard-angled shot on target for the shorthanded, empty-net goal.
  • 3rd, 18:20 // 5-1 – NU GOAL (PPG) – Kendall Coyne scored her 50th goal of the season and Northeastern's only goal of the game when she collected Hayley Scamurra's pass in the NU end and skated into the BC zone down the boards, cut inside and ripped a high shot past Katie Burt with less than 2:00 to play.
