Eagles Fifth in the Nation in Graduation Rate

Eagles Fifth in the Nation in Graduation Rate

Boston College once again ranks fifth in the nation in overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in all sports among FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools. The NCAA released the most recent GSR information today. | Full GSR Information

BC boasted a GSR of 95 for the class of student-athletes that entered in 2009, a rate topped only by Notre Dame (98), Stanford (98), Northwestern (97) and Duke (97).

Boston College has earned a mark of 95 or better in each of the 12 GSR reports, which first date back to the class of student-athletes that entered in 1998.

Only 12 other FBS schools earned a GSR of 90 or more: Central Florida (93), Vanderbilt (93), Tulane (93), Charlotte (92), Wake Forest (92), Virginia Tech (92), Clemson (91), South Carolina (91), Iowa (90), Syracuse (90), Michigan (90) and Minnesota (90).

The football team's score of 90 is the ninth-best nationally and increased one point from the 2015 GSR release. BC is one of only nine programs earned a score of 90 or higher: Stanford (99), Northwestern (97), South Carolina (95), Rice (94), Duke (94), Notre Dame (93), Central Florida (91), Wake Forest (91) and BC.

Thirteen (13) Boston College teams earned a perfect GSR score of 100: women's basketball, men's golf, field hockey, women's hockey, lacrosse, rowing, men's skiing, women's skiing, women's soccer, softball, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, women's track and field and volleyball.

Twenty-two of the Eagles' 24 programs reviewed earned GSR scores of 80 or better, including 20 with marks of 90 or more.

The GSR was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiatives, which were to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. Institutions are held accountable for transfer students – unlike the federal graduation rate – as well as midyear enrollees. The GSR is calculated both overall for a university, as well as for each sport sponsored by a school.

More information about the GSR is available at ncaa.org.
