Boston College Trio Wins Gold at World Junior Championship

The Eagles now have 10 different players to earn a gold medal at World Juniors

EDMONTON, Alberta – Sophomores Matt Boldy, Drew Helleson and Spencer Knight won gold medals for the United States at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship on Tuesday night at Rogers Place, defeating classmate Alex Newhook and Team Canada 2-0.

The trio gives Boston College 10 different players who have earned a total of 11 gold medals in the history of the World Junior Championship. The U.S. won its fifth World Junior title and first since 2017 when an American squad featuring Casey Fitzgerald, Colin White and Joseph Woll defeated Canada in a shootout.

Knight shut down the high-powered Canadians with 34 saves in the Gold Medal Game, posting the first shutout in a medal round game in U.S. history. He also set the Team USA record for shutouts in a World Juniors single tournament (3) and in a World Juniors career (3). Knight went 5-1-0 in six starts with a 1.63 goals against average and a .940 save percentage.

Boldy finished tied for fourth at the tournament in goals with five and had a point per game in seven contests. Helleson had the primary assist on Alex Turcotte's game-winning goal last night and closed the event with two goals (both game-winners), two assists and a plus-9 rating, which was tied for the U.S. team-lead.

By winning silver, Newhook became just the third Eagle ever to capture a World Junior medal for Canada, joining Dan Bertram (gold in 2006 and 2007) and Chuck Kobasew (silver in 2002). The Newfoundland native finished the tournament with three goals and three assists for six points in six games.
