Philanthropy & Community Development

boston, ma & phoenix, az: january 18 - 28, 2011

The cities of Boston and Phoenix hosted a group of fourteen individuals from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland for a ten-day study-visit. The participants included decision-makers from grant making organizations(philanthropic foundations and trusts), micro-financing organizations, community development bodies, and relevant government agencies.  The program’s seminars and visits engaged the participants in a discussion with their American counterparts that examined expanding the reach of private philanthropy, using social and economic indicators to make funding decisions, endowment management, setting enhanced criteria for board membership, and identifying existing and emerging areas of under-funding. These interactions also provided the group an opportunity to exchange best-practice strategies and to create professional networks with each other and with their U.S. hosts.
