James J. Conn, S.J. is a native of Philadelphia, and since 1974 has been a priest of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus. He was previously Ordinary Professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned his doctorate. He is a consultor of the Holy See’s Congregation for the Clergy and a commissioner of the matrimonial section of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Prior to his assignment in Rome he was a teacher and administrator at several Jesuit-sponsored secondary schools and universities in the United States and praeses of the ecclesiastical faculty of theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore and dean of its School of Theology. He serves as a canonical advisor to episcopal conferences, diocesan bishops, and institutes of consecrated life. A graduate of Fordham Law School, he is a member of the Bar in Maryland and the District of Columbia. His research interests include canonical questions concerning parishes, Catholic educational institutions, priestly formation, and the relations between bishops and institutes of consecrated life.
