Dual Degrees

BCSSW offers three dual degree graduate programs—in partnership with other schools at Boston College—for students interested in earning both an MSW and a JD, an MBA, or an MA in Theology and Ministry. We also offer a BA/MSW degree for Boston College undergraduates and a highly selective MSW/PhD in Social Work.

MSW/JD Dual Degree

The MSW/JD Dual Degree Program is designed for students who are interested in serving the combined legal and social needs of individuals, families, groups, and communities. Graduates earn both an MSW and a JD in four years, rather than the usual five, and are eligible to take the bar and social work licensing exams.  While most students begin the program at the School of Social Work, exceptions may be made for students who apply during their first year of law school.

To enroll, you must be accepted independently by both schools and register as a full-time student throughout the four-year program. For more information, contact:

MSW/MBA Dual Degree

The MSW/MBA Dual Degree Program provides professionals with a knowledge base that combines the skills and credentials of management and social work. Students earn both an MSW and an MBA in three years, completing the School of Social Work’s core curriculum during their first year and the Carroll School of Management’s core curriculum during their second. During the third year, students take additional courses in both schools and complete a three-day-per-week field education placement. Students must also complete two social work electives in the summer before their final year.

To enroll, you must be accepted independently by both schools. For more information, contact:

MSW/MA Dual Degree

Students in the Dual Degree in Social Work (MSW) and Theology and Ministry (MA) Program may expect to earn both the MA in Theology and Ministry and the MSW degrees in approximately three years of full-time study. In addition to coursework in both schools, students must complete two social work field education placements: one during their MSW foundation year and another during their final year of study.

BA/MSW Dual Degree

Through Boston College’s Bachelor of Arts and Master of Social Work Dual Degree Program, qualified Boston College undergraduates can complete both a BA—in Sociology, Psychology, or Applied Psychology and Human Development—and an MSW in only five years. Students begin direct service work and social work foundation courses during their junior and senior years, earning a BA at the end of four years and an MSW after the fifth year.

To apply, you must submit a fee-free electronic application in your sophomore year along with your Boston College transcript, one recommendation, and a two-to-three-page personal statement. For more information, contact the program liaison for your department. To request a curriculum plan, contact the School of Social Work admissions team:
