I study U.S. political history, especially the Federal Government’s southern policy during the era of Reconstruction. The history and memory of this period provide unique insight into issues at the core of American politics, such as economic inequality, racial conflict, and the power of the Federal Government. In particular, I am interested in how and why politicians decided on certain policies and what effect these policies had on white and black southerners.
