I study race and politics in the United States, especially between the Civil War and the end of the nineteenth century. I argue that many of the enduring characteristics of the United States are rooted in this period, which represents an extended era of reconstruction. In particular, I am interested in viewing the reestablishment of white supremacy in the context of the black freedom struggle. I explore this through analysis of the construction of policy at the national level and its effects on the lived experiences of people at the local level.
