The Emmaus Series Graduates National Cohort of Catholic School Leaders
20-month Professional Development Program Focuses on Transformative Leadership
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass., April 27, 2016 – The Emmaus Series for Catholic School Leaders, a program of the Roche Center for Catholic Education at Boston College, recently celebrated the commencement of its 2014 cohort of Catholic school principals and heads of school, marking the close of a 20-month professional development journey. The Emmaus Series consists of workshops, webinars, and retreats designed to form transformative leaders in Catholic education. Twenty-five school leaders took part in the commencement, which featured keynote speaker, Dr. Thomas Groome, renowned religious educator and Boston College theologian. A day-long workshop on effective school leaders was also held for more than 60 Catholic school principals currently in The Emmaus Series with guest speaker Dr. Michael Corso of The Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations.
“When I arrived at The Emmaus Series, I felt like I finally found my peer group,” said one graduating principal from Jersey City, NJ. “Meeting Catholic school principals from all over the country, getting to know them, and sharing our experiences over the last two years has been life-changing for me. This program gave me the knowledge and inspiration I needed to go back to my school and work on taking it to the next level.”
The Emmaus Series is designed to deepen the core competencies of Catholic school principals and heads of school in three key areas: academic leadership, business management, and spiritual leadership. Workshops and webinars focus on key issues such as effective financial planning, school marketing and enrollment, and Catholic school mission, among others.
During his presentation, Dr. Corso shared a systems problem-solving approach to help school leaders understand the variables that can hinder effective school change. Principals and heads of school collaborated on hands-on exercises, sharing their experiences and knowledge to solve real-life school problems.
“The workshop with Dr. Corso helped me to break down the big picture of my school operations into various systems and look at the way each system works,” said one principal.
The Emmaus Series for Catholic School leaders has graduated more than 60 Catholic school leaders since it was first launched in 2012. Based on the research and thought leadership of Boston College’s Roche Center for Catholic Education, the program will welcome its 2016 cohort of Catholic school leaders in July.
