The Charles F. Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars program is an intensive one-year Masters in Education, M.Ed., program leading to teacher licensure, that seeks to prepare K-12 teachers to work effectively with students and families in urban schools throughout the country.
The Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars Program builds on specific programs of study with interactive urban education seminars, critical inquiry research, social justice education, and community building that is responsive to the academic and socio-cultural needs of urban youth and their families.
Each year the program recruits nationally for a diverse cohort of up to 30 graduate students, many of whom were educated in urban schools themselves, and aspire to give back to their communities in constructive and life long ways. For the majority of applicants, the Donovan program is their initial step into urban teaching. Some have prior teaching experience, or hold a license in elementary or secondary education and want to add a license in new subject areas. Other students are in the process of career change, but all are dedicated to preparing themselves to work as teachers in urban schools.

Applications for the Donovan Program will not be reviewed for the early decision deadline. If you are applying to multiple programs, feel free to submit for the early decison deadline; the application will be reviewed after January 9, 2019 for Donovan Program acceptance.
The GRE is not required for BC alumni and fifth years. Fifth year students, please email your updated personal statement and resume to Jessica Rivers, Catherine Wong, and Zina Hodge; you do not need to complete the online application.

Donovan scholars select the program of study from the list below which correlates with a state license. You may choose any state to become licensed in and will complete the appropriate assessment(s). For example, a person seeking a teacher license in MA will complete their educator preparation program (M.Ed.), receive endorsement, and pass the MTELs required for the subject area/grade level.
At this time, Donovan Scholars are not able to participate in dual licensure programs because the amount of required credits exceeds the length of the one year program.
Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars are placed in an urban Boston area school for both their pre-practicum and full practicum experiences. All students who are employed while completing the program of study will submit a proposal to the Practicum Office to ensure feasibility.
All Donovan Scholars receive at minimum 50% tuition remission (TR), and we work with each Donovan to secure additional funding through scholarships, grants, internships, loans, etc. Applicants should complete the FASFA process.
Upon graduation, Donovan Scholars commit to teach in urban schools (Catholic, charter or public) for at least 3 years.

Donovan Scholars bring a wealth of experience to our cherished partners: Boston Public Schools, City Year, Cambridge Public Schools, Epiphany Early Learning Center and School, and the Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers.
In addition, we look for candidates from programs which support the advancement of urban education including: Breakthrough, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, Posse, Upward Bound, and comparable programs.
Dr. Charles Grandson IV
Interim Chief Academic Officer-Boston Public Schools
Dr. Charles Grandson IV earned his M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction in 2006 from the Lynch School, where he was a Donovan Urban Teaching Scholar and a Bank of America Scholar in Urban Education, a national fellowship awarded to talented graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to urban education. In 2014, he earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the Lynch School’s Professional School Administrator Program.
His career began in education as a BPS humanities teacher at the West Roxbury Education Complex, where he worked to close opportunity and achievement gaps by implementing data-driven inquiry cycles and developed culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy. Due to his incredible influence and mentoring, his former student, Raymond Zapata, recently graduated in May 2018 as a Donovan Urban Teaching Scholar and is currently teaching math at the Washington Irving Middle School. Dr. Grandson returns annually to share his wisdom with Donovan cohorts.
He now serves as the Interim Chief Academic Officer for Boston Public Schools. Dr. Grandson previously worked as Interim Superintendent of the Malden Public Schools, Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services and Systemic Initiatives of the Poughkeepsie City School District in New York, and as a turnaround high school principal in Springfield, MA.

All Donovan Scholars receive 50% tuition remission. In addition, the Lynch School of Education Graduate Admissions office and Urban Outreach Initiatives work with each Donovan Scholar to create a generous financial package that may include additional grants, scholarships and internships.
In order to apply to the Donovan program, applicants must:

In addition to your academic history and relevant work experience, please include any licenses currently held, any social justice-related experience, any language skills other than English, and any research experience or publications.
In 1,000-1,500 words, describe your academic and professional goals, your interest and relevant experience in Urban Education, and your future plans, expectations, and aspirations.
Two letters of recommendation are required with at least one required from an academic source. Applicants may submit one additional recommendation of their choice.
Undergraduate transcripts are required as part of the application process and graduate transcripts are accepted, but not required. Please note the following:
Only official transcripts, bearing the official seal of the institution and the signature of the relevant administrator, are acceptable.
Copies and unofficial transcripts are not acceptable.
If you are a current student and have not completed your undergraduate degree at the time your transcript is sent, the most updated version of your transcript is acceptable.

An unofficial score report may be uploaded to your online Application Form; however, an official score report – sent directly from ETS – must also be submitted by the application deadline.
This program requires all applicants to have taken the GRE in a maximum of 5 years prior to application being submitted, regardless of previous academic coursework, previous degrees/credentials earned, and/or professional experience. No exceptions will be made.
The MAT may also be substituted for the GRE.
