Program Overview

Throughout the 20-month program, participants receive formative professional development in three core areas. Training in these areas is structured around the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools. The central objectives for each leadership area are as follows:   

Spiritual Leadership: Inspiring the school community with leadership that demonstrates an ongoing effort to align the joy of the Gospel with all aspects of school life, an uplifting fluency of the Catholic faith, a visible and measurable commitment to the mission of the school, and a consistent investment to the faith formation of all community members.  

Curriculum and Instructional Leadership:  Leading a professional and pastoral process of evaluating and encouraging teacher growth, facilitating meaningful assessments of school-wide learning, identifying and allocating effective resources to improve student learning, and organizing and scheduling student and teacher learning strategies to achieve student growth goals.    

Operational Leadership: Empowering an administrative team to manage daily operations, modeling contemporary communications effectively, and championing adaptive planning and data-informed decision-making for actions involving school finances, facilities, marketing and enrollment, institutional advancement, and personnel.

Aimed at school improvement, participants will be coached to:

  • Lead the mission of their school

  • Apply the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools

  • Scaffold improved non-profit business practices for their schools

  • Form whole-child assessment practices

  • Grow and sustain supportive learning communities for faculty and staff

  • ...and much more

Workshops and Retreats

Each school leader will select 3-5 people from his/her school community to serve as members of a leadership team. These selected team members should be chosen based on the topic of the workshop, so they may change from one session to another. Team members will join the school leader for each workshop to collaborate and assist in evaluating and introducing change ideas. (Fee for participation of extra team members in workshops is included in initial program fee.)

  • Foundational Retreat July 16-18, 2019 (3 days, 2 nights at Connors Family Retreat and Conference Center in Dover, Massachusetts)
  • Workshop - September 17, 2019
  • Workshop - November 5, 2019
  • Workshop - January 21, 2019
  • Workshop - April 8, 2019
  • Spring Retreat May 6-8, 2020 (3 days, 2 nights at the Wylie Inn in Beverly, MA)
  • Workshop - September 22, 2020
  • Workshop - November 10, 2020
  • Final Retreat and Commencement- date TBA (2 days with overnight at the Connors Family Retreat and Conference Center in Dover, MA) - The Journey Goes On 

Emmaus Leadership Series Fees

There are two pathways to complete the Emmaus Leadership Series. Final course credit decisions will be determined at the time of your enrollment.

*Credit: Participants who choose this path will have the option to earn graduate level credits as part of completing the Emmaus Series. Participants on this path will be expected to complete the above requirements in addition to coursework. This will include weekly 75 minute online class discussions and an inquiry project due at the end of each semester. A total of 6 graduate credits are available through the 20 months of the Emmaus Series.

Non Credit: Participants who choose to take the not-for-credit path will be expected to complete only the above requirements (1-2 meetings/sessions per month) and will not have any additional coursework to complete.

These fees are for the non-credit path only:

The fee to participate in the entire series is $2,000. This covers:

  • 3-day Foundational Retreat (accommodations and meals)
  • 3-day Spring Retreat (accommodations and meals)
  • 2-day Commencement Retreat (accommodations and meals)
  • 8 Workshop registrations for you and 3-5 team members from your school community including meals and accommodations as needed

The cost to the Barbara and Patrick Roche Center for Catholic Education is $4,000. Because of our strong commitment to Catholic school leadership, the Roche Center subsidizes $2,000 of your participation. Financial assistance with your fee, as well as support with accessing federal Title II funds or other local funding sources, is available.

The Emmaus Series has broadened my understanding of how Catholic schools are functioning and growing in many regions of our country. The topics that are vital to moving Catholic schools forward in the 21st century. The content provided was spot on, leading all of our cohort to think of Catholic schools in a way that prompted forward thinking, Faith enrichment, and academically rigorous curricula, all of which are ingredients to building Catholic schools of substance for the future. I am also grateful for the Emmaus Series because of the friends I have made and the strong network of support that I now feel I have thanks to this program.
