The Master's program in Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology (ADEP) at the Lynch School of Education is designed for students who want to deepen their understanding of children and youth, as well as the influence of families, schools, and communities on development. It is ideal for individuals who are interested in making meaningful differences in children's lives through education, advocacy, research, policy, or direct services.
Students work closely with faculty mentors to create an individualized program that addresses their specific areas of interest and career goals. Our program provides opportunities to complete internships, collaborate on research, and engage informally with faculty in ways that enable students to better integrate theory and practice. As part of their Master's studies, students also may elect to complete a certificate in one of our 5 areas of specialization: Positive Youth Development, Child and Family Mental Health, Human Rights and International Justice, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Early Childhood Leadership.

This program consists of 5 required courses and 5 electives, which allow students to create individualized programs tailored to their interests and career goals. Total of 30 credits.
The program is flexible, allowing students to matriculate full-time and complete the program in 1 to 2 years, or to attend part-time, completing their degree in 2 or more years.
Students can begin the program in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
Applied Child Development
This course will address cognitive, language, social, and emotional development in infants, preschoolers, and elementary school age children with a special emphasis on applying developmental science to public policy and professional practice with children and families.
Applied Adolescent Development
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the theoretical and empirical knowledge base concerning adolescent development. In particular, four broad areas will be considered: (1) psychological, biological, and cognitive transitions; (2) central developmental tasks of adolescence; (3) primary contextual influences; and (4) prevalent types of problematic functioning that emerge during adolescence.
Learning and Cognition
Discusses theories of learning and cognitive development, explores roles of biology and environment, and examines different interpretations of environment. Discusses whether learning and cognitive development are similar or different processes.
|APSY 7470||Advanced Practicum: Applied Psychology
Students meet once a week to discuss their required field work (8-10 hours per week) and to relate their field work to psychological theories, research, and applications. Readings and discussion contribute to critical analyses of how social issues and social problems are situated differently due to gender, race, social class, and diversities of language, ability, sexuality, etc. Participants will explore strategies for translating this knowledge and experience into resources that enable them to identify future career options.

This program requires all applicants to have taken the GRE in a maximum of 5 years prior to application being submitted, regardless of previous academic coursework, previous degrees/credentials earned, and/or professional experience. No exceptions will be made.
The GRE is the only exam that is acceptable for this program; the MAT, LSAT, MTEL, GMAT, and other exams may not be substituted for the GRE.

An international applicant is defined as any person that requires a student visa in order to study in the United States. International applicants are eligible to apply to any graduate program in The Lynch School, provided they have successfully completed the equivalent of a United States bachelor degree and have the appropriate diplomas and/or satisfactory results on transcripts or leaving examinations from the country in which the degree was earned. International applicants must complete all program-specific application requirements as well as additional requirements outlined below.
Applicants that have completed a degree outside of the United States must have a course-by-course evaluation of their transcript(s) completed by an evaluation company approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). All applicants whose primary language is not English (or for whom English is not one of their primary languages) are required to submit proof of satisfactory English proficiency. At this time, the only acceptable forms of proof for English proficiency are the TOEFL and IELTS exams (certificates of completion from English-language schools are not currently accepted). The Lynch School offers Conditional Acceptance to applicants that fulfill all academic requirements for admission to and are accepted to the program, but whose level of English proficiency does not meet the minimum requirements. In these cases, admitted students will be granted conditional admission, but will have to retake the TOEFL or IELTS exam and submit an official score report that shows the minimum score has been met no later than six weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student’s program will begin. If a student with conditional admission does not submit a passing TOEFL or IELTS score within the allotted time frame, he/she will be granted a deferral to start in a future semester, no later than one year from the original start term. Due to this policy, we strongly encourage international applicants to apply as early as possible in order to ensure that these conditions can be met.
