2018 Beanpot Champions!

Watts tallies twice, including the game-tying goal late in the third, setting up Miano's OT winner

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Toni Ann Miano scored the game-winning goal 14:57 into overtime as the No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team won its third straight Beanpot title – and eighth overall – with a 4-3 victory over Boston University on Tuesday night at Kelley Rink.

Beanpot Most Valuable Player Daryl Watts netted two goals, including the game-tying goal with 4:08 to play in regulation, to push her nation-leading goal total to 39. BU's Victoria Bach, the nation's second-leading goal scorer, tallied her 35th of the season to start the Terrier's second-period comeback.

Boston College (26-3-3) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, using Watts' first of the day just 2:18 into the game to stake a 1-0 lead. Just over midway through the stanza, Molly Slowe – who moved up from the fourth line to the second at the start of the shift – netted her second career goal at 12:26 and sent the Eagles into the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

Boston University (11-15-6) started chipping away at the Eagles' lead early in the second period and turned the tides by the end of the stanza. Bach converted on a breakaway chance – her third such effort of the game – at 3:15 before Reagan Rust knotted the score with a power-play blast 45 seconds later at 4:00. Rebecca Leslie put BU ahead for the first time of the game when she took a Bach feed and wristed it past BC goalie Katie Burt at 8:16 of the second.

The Terriers took the one-goal advantage into the third period and out-shot the Eagles 9-7 in a defensive frame, but Watts broke through – off a set-up from Slowe – with just over five minutes to play and tied the game at 3-3. BU goalie Corinne Schroeder stopped Makenna Newkirk on the doorstep with seconds remaining in the game and the teams went to overtime.

In the extra session, Burt made eight saves and the Terriers out-shot the Eagles 8-5, but Miano's final shot of the game, on the power play, gave BC the victory and the 2018 Beanpot Trophy.

Overall, Burt made 35 saves and earned the tournament's Bertagna Trophy as the top goaltender, stopping 71 shots between last week's first round and today's championship game. Watts claimed the MVP award after scoring four goals and adding one assist in the Eagles' two games en route to the championship. She tied with Bach (three goals, two assists) for the 2018 tournament's scoring lead.

Boston College returns to action on Friday, Feb. 16, when the team heads up to Orono, Maine, for the first of two games against Maine at Alfond Arena. Faceoff in Friday's game is set for 2 p.m. The teams will meet again at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, in Orono in the teams' 2017-18 regular-season finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st, 2:18 | BC GOAL, 1-0 – As two Terriers converged on the far side boards to break the puck out of the BU end, Caitrin Lonergan got a stick on the weighted clearance attempt and the puck redirected toward Toni Ann Miano in front of the BU bench. She broke back into the Terreiers' end and Miano ripped a shot on goaltender Corinne Schroeder, but it was blocked in front. The rebound fell right at Daryl Watts' feet and she ripped a shot past Schroeder's glove shoulder and the post, putting BC up 1-0 less than three minutes into the game.
  • 1st, 12:26 | BC GOAL, 2-0 – BU tried to clear the puck from its end, but Grace Bizal tracked it down in the neutral zone and played Lonergan up the boards. Lonergan cut into the Terrier end and laid a pass off for Watts cutting across the zone behind her. Watts curled and headed low, where she centered a pass at the dot to Molly Slowe on the other wing, setting Slowe up for the open-net redirection and a 2-0 Boston College lead.
  • 2nd, 3:14 | BU GOAL, 2-1 – Reagan Rust broke up the Eagles' entry pass and flicked it up the neutral zone, where Victoria Bach picked it up and skated in against a BC defender. After making a quick cut inside, she fired a quick wrist shot back across her body, beating Katie Burt and getting the Terriers on the board.
  • 2nd, 4:00 | BU GOAL, 2-2 – With an Eagle in the box, BU went on the power play. Nara Elia gained possession on the far side half boards, and pushed the puck up to Rust at the point. She traded passes with Abbey Stanley before unleashing a slapshot from just inside the blue line that found space under Burt through traffic, evening up the game at 2-2.
  • 2nd, 8:16 | BU GOAL, 2-3 – Breanna Scarpaci wrapped the puck around the end boards in her own end, and Rebecca Leslie dug the puck out on the far side boards, just inside the blue line. Bach jumped on the puck and skated out, creating an odd-man rush as Nina Rodgers joined the play. As Rodgers skated deep and took a BC defender with her, it opened a passing lane for Bach to center a pass to Leslie and allowing the captain to get off a wrist shot from the hashmarks that put BU ahead.
  • 3rd, 15:52 | BC GOAL, 3-3 – With time winding down in the game and BC trailing by one, BU wrapped the puck around the boards in its own end. As the Terrier defender tried to keep it in the zone, Slowe broke up the play and poked it out into neutral ice, springing a break with Watts trailing the play on the 2-on-2. Slowe gained the zone and sent a pass across to Watts in the high slot, where she roofed a shot over Schroeder to tie the game up and send the teams to overtime.
  • OT, 14:57 | BC GOAL, 4-3 (PPG) – With Stanley's tripping penalty 30 seconds from expiring, BC called a timeout to rest its top power-play unit. After the break, Lonergan won the draw in BU's end and Makenna Newkirk and Kenzie Kent worked the puck behind the net and over to the left side of the ice. After both traded passes with Miano at the near point, Newkirk played a final pass to the blue liner who was undefended at the center point. Miano skated into space and wrapped a wrist shot from the top of the circle down toward goal and into traffic, beating Schroeder and winning BC's third-straight Beanpot title.
