Reineke Crowned Women's Singlehanded National Champion

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Boston College freshman Sophia Reineke was victorious on the weekend, finishing in the top spot in the Laser Performance Women's Singlehanded National Regatta, hosted by the University of South Florida.

The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native, who qualified for the Nationals Regatta by means of a fifth place finish in the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship in September, emerged as the first-place finisher after a tight weekend of racing. With just one point and three points separating her and the second- and third-place finishers, respectively, Reineke claimed her first major singlehanded victory as an Eagle.

On the men's side of the competition, sophomore Scott Rasmussen represented the Eagles, who qualified for Nationals at the NEISA Men's Singlehanded Championship in September with his second-place finish. Rasmussen capped off the weekend taking fifth place overall, falling just short in the tiebreaker for fourth. Again, the field of competition was tight: a total of three points separated the second-place and fifth-place finishers.

Closer to home, Boston College raced in the Mike Horn Trophy, hosted by Harvard. The squad of skippers Lily McGrath, Colin Brego and Thomas Walden, and a crew of Tara Ferraris, Elizabeth Matheson and Caroline Downey teamed up to claim first-place overall. A record of 4-1 in the weekend's races propelled the Eagles into the top spot, edging out Boston University.

The Eagles also competed in the Hap Moore Team Race, hosted by Connecticut College in the waters of New London, Conn. Represented by skippers Isabella Loosbrock, Peter Lynn and Wade Waddell, and a crew of Emma Perry, Katharine Bowman and Lizzie Bohan, the Eagles finished in second-place overall, after winning six out of their seven races on the weekend, falling only to the hosts and eventual victors, Connecticut College.

Looking ahead, the Eagles will compete in the ISSA Atlantic Coast Championship to be held next weekend, November 11-12, at the Yocum Sailing Center in Kings Point, N.Y.
