What's New in the Theology Department

March 30, 2017

It has been another exciting and productive year at the Heights! I hope you will enjoy an inside look at some of the highlights in the Theology Department:

  • We welcomed three new members to the department: Professor of the Practice Matthew Kruger, to teach in the PULSE program; Professor of the Practice Natana DeLong-Bas, to teach courses in Islam and Muslim-Christian dialogue; and Professor Kristin Heyer, a prominent professor of Christian ethics specializing in immigration issues. Finally, Jeremy Wilkins, an expert in the thought of Lonergan, will be joining the department in fall 2016.
  • The 2015 inaugural Duffy Lecture Series in Global Christianity featured Professor Maria Clara Bingemer from Brazil. Each year, the department will host a prominent theologian from a different continent to deliver a series of lectures on the important questions and issues at stake in their particular context. These lectures will be published each year by Orbis Books.
  • The 2016 Duffy Lecture Series featured Professor Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator, S.J., of Hekima University College in Kenya.

In other news, the department continues to offer a summer course in Rome, which is team-taught by Professors Boyd Coolman and Liam Bergin. It represents a great learning opportunity for our majors, and we have made funds available from gifts to the department for students who would not otherwise be able to attend the course. If you wish to contribute to this cause, you can donate to the department.

We look forward to hearing from Theology Department graduates and encourage you to keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Catherine Cornille
Newton College Alumnae Professor of Western Culture and Chair, Theology Department
