Warmest greetings and best wishes for continued personal and professional success from the Fine Arts Department! This has been yet another productive academic year for our dynamic department, and I would like to share some especially noteworthy developments:
- Norma Jean Calderwood University Professors of Islamic and Asian Art Jonathan Bloom and Sheila Blair have edited a new book entitled God Is the Light of the Heavens and the Earth: Light in Islamic Art and Culture (The Biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art).
- In the area of film studies, John Michalczyk released a new film on the clergy abuse scandal.
- The studio program has opened a new digital laboratory where new courses are being taught in digital photography and digital imaging.
In other news, the McMullen Museum organized an acclaimed exhibition of the American painter John La Farge that has been praised in, among other places, The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal. In recognition of its string of excellent exhibitions and accompanying scholarly catalogues, the McMullen will soon relocate to a larger space on the Brighton Campus.
We hope those of you in the area will visit the current exhibition, The Arts and Crafts Movement: Making It Irish, on view through June 5. It is the first comprehensive examination of the Irish Arts and Crafts in its context of cultural nationalism and major political transformation—and it is both fascinating and beautiful.
We strongly encourage you to keep in touch and to forward any news to our department so that we may add it to our website.
